What is the difference between a patent and a trade mark?

My readers seem to be a mixed bunch, however increasingly you appear to be less and less experienced with the world of intellectual property (hence why you are here!) which got me thinking that it was about time that I made a simple guide as to the differences between the different forms of IP.
